چکیده

Individuals within organizations are beginning to make an important realization: more information technology (IT) usage in the workplace can, at times, lead to productivity losses. We conceptualize this frequently observed, but largely ignored phenomenon as technology overload, when additional technology tools begin to crowd out one’s productivity instead of enhancing it. We found support for three main factors contributing technology-based productivity losses through information overload, communication overload, and system feature overload. Interestingly, these factors are a function of the individuals who use the technology, not the technology itself. In this paper, we present the results from three studies that (1) develop and pre-test a scale measurement for technology overload and its distinct dimensions, (2) validate the instrument, and (3) explore the relationship between technology overload and knowledge worker productivity. Our findings demonstrate the relationship between information technology usage and knowledge worker productivity, and they suggest how tradeoffs can be managed to ameliorate technology overload. 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Information Technology and Knowledge Worker Productivity: A Taxonomy of Technology Crowding

This paper explores unintended consequences of information technology use on knowledge worker productivity in the workplace. Drawing upon economics principles and theoretical frameworks of bounded rationality, task-technology fit, and human interruption theory, we propose a taxonomy of technology crowding which is a phenomenon that occurs at the point in which more technology usage which otherw...

Technology Overload: Gender-based Perceptions of Knowledge Worker Performance

Gender studies show numerous differences between genders in regard to technology, and emphasize that women are underrepresented in IT-related academic programs and careers. Because technology is so prevalent in our workforce, it is important to study how technology usage affects white-collared working women. We explore the relationship between three dimensions of technology overload and knowled...

Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps for Prediction of Knowledge Worker Productivity Based on Real Coded Genetic Algorithm

Improving knowledge worker productivity has been one of the most important tasks of the century. However, we have few measures or management interventions to make such improvement possible, and it is difficult to identify patterns that should be followed by knowledge workers because systems and processes in an organization are often regarded as a death blow to creativity. In this paper, we se...
